The Kit Club

The Kit Club was created by Milo and Maya (6th and 8th grade), following the footsteps of Bill Leikam, otherwise known as the Fox Guy. We chose the name “Kit Club” because young gray foxes are called “kits.”
The Kit Club monitors local species by using trail cameras to observe the critters behavior in their natural environment. We also spread awareness about local wildlife, whether it is writing an article, discussing things with each other, giving speeches or even just creating art or whatever you love to do! Some examples are Milo’s speech at his school and article in the Barron Park newsletter or Maya’s analysis about the kangaroo rat (a recent project) and beautiful artwork!

Milo & Maya

When Kay Lou finished reading my book, the Road to Fox Hollow, she got in touch with us and asked, “How can I help?” Her background was such, that we immediately invited her to join the team. She brought with her, her 11-year-old son, Milo. Milo brought with him his friend Maya. Both are avid wildlife devotees hungry to learn everything possible about wildlife. It was as we mounted a couple of cameras along a creek that Maya suggested a name for a club. She said, “Kit Club because baby foxes are called kits.” The name stuck.
The Kit Club is the kid’s extension of the Urban Wildlife Research Project (UWRP). Although small at the moment, just about four months old, Milo and Maya’s enthusiasm will generate growth. Already Milo has been asked by his school to make a presentation about the wildlife along Matadero Creek and in people’s backyards. Maya has reached out to the principal and two other school officials about placing her trail cameras in the wooded regions of the Woodside Priory (https://www.prioryca.org/) where she attends school. She has overwhelming approval from the administrators.
